Yvonne Guzman Retires

Dark haired woman seated alone at restaurant.

I have had the great pleasure of knowing Yvonne Guzman, Sales Manager for Visit Denver, The Convention & Visitor’s Bureau for Denver, Colorado for more than eight years. With her warm demeanor, polished approach, and vast industry knowledge, working with Yvonne has always been a pleasure and the recent announcement of her retirement made me feel wistful. I had the opportunity to catch up with Yvonne on the eve of her retirement.

Michael: Yvonne, I cannot believe you are retiring! What do you plan on doing during your retirement?

Yvonne: I plan to enjoy life with my husband Benito who is already retired. We plan on traveling a bit and just loving life together. I am really looking forward to spending time with my family, too. I have two sons and a granddaughter plus my mother and siblings and we enjoy getting together. I plan to go back to school part time because, at some point, I would like to become a Spanish translator.

M: What do you think you’ll miss most about your job with Visit Denver?

Y: This is a difficult question to answer because I am not sure there is only one “most.” I will miss the daily interaction with my colleagues who are all such wonderful people and very supportive. I will also really miss my clients because many of them have become my friends.

M: What is the most memorable request ever made of you by a planner?

Y: It was when I received this huge RFP that required a lot of meeting space at the convention center and the client wanted me to assign meeting space for each room requested. There were many pages to complete and it was a lengthy project. It was actually like a book as opposed to a typical RFP. It was a learning experience for me.

M: What do you recommend to someone wanting to get into the business?

Y: It is a great business to get into because of all of the opportunities. I would say the most important thing is to look for a great stable company to work for. A company that offers a lot of support from the leadership level where their focus is making sure you are being set up for success. Although success comes from within, it is also important to have strong support and a positive team environment.

Yvonne Guzman’s last day at the bureau was August 2nd. If you would like to discuss Denver as a meeting destination, please contact: Amanda Rodriguez at arodriguez@visitdenver.com.
